The first Tuesday of each month is devoted to a competition night. The aim of these friendly yet competitive contests is to improve skills. Professional photographers or artists judge the entries and provide constructive feedback. Listening to feedback on other member's images is also a useful learning opportunity. Members love to see each other's work and may also provide useful comment and encouragement.
Members may enter projected images or prints in either colour or monochrome. While projected images are shown separately, there are no separate categories for colour or monochrome in either the projected image or print sections.
Members may enter in either A Grade or B Grade. New members usually start in B grade. This is because our judges are asked to take into account that B grade photographers are likely to be less experienced. New members may request admission to A grade if they wish.
Members may enter a total of two images in each regular monthly competition. Different rules apply for the Portfolio Competitions.
You can enter images on any subject matter in the "OPEN" section. See the list for the "SET TOPICS" categories.
Judges are asked to provide feedback and to award each image a score out of 5. Half points may be awarded. The judges' scores are doubled to give an overall score. These scores are accumulated throughout the year to determine the annual aggregate scores. Awards are made to the photographers with the highest aggregate scores in A grade and B grade at the Annual Awards Showcase in December.
There are also three stand alone competitions: the Bica Projected Image Portfolio Competition for a portfolio of 4-6 projected digital images, the Ted's Cameras Hedda Morrison Award for a portfolio of 4-6 colour or mono prints, and the Annual Awards Showcase where awards are given for the Colour Print of the Year, the Monochrome Print of the Year and the Projected Image of the Year. At the Annual Awards Showcase there are also People's Choice Awards and awards presented to the winners of the Annual Photochallenge held in October.
The rules may look a bit daunting at first glance. While they do need to be precise, they are actually pretty simple. If you want to enter but need assistance, contact the Competition Director.
